How to Check Car Oil

Auto Mechanic Checking Oil

One of the most important parts of your vehicle’s maintenance comes down to your car oil. Motor oil is the lifeblood of your Ford vehicle as it protects all the engine’s internal moving parts, ensuring that they’re running smoothly and efficiently when you’re out in Williamsport.

Take a look below to learn more about how to check car oil from the service team at our Bellefonte dealer today.

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

How to check car oil is usually straightforward. Some newer vehicles come with electronic oil monitors and don’t come with traditional dipsticks. Check your owner’s manual for recommendations on how to check the oil level in your car and to find out if your vehicle uses a dipstick. Here’s a step-by-step process to checking car oil with a dipstick:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground and make sure that the engine is turned off and cold.
  2. Open your vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

Dipsticks have a way to indicate the proper oil level for your vehicle. It’s usually something like two marks or a cross-hatched area near the end of the dipstick. Your oil streak should be within these marks or within the cross-hatched area. If not, your car likely needs more oil. Only use the oil recommended for your make and model, and don’t add too much at a time. It’s easier to add oil than to try and remove it.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

Oil checks should be performed at least once a month while oil changes are recommended to be performed twice a year. This is to ensure there are no leaks and to make sure your car has enough oil for all your journeys through State College.

If you notice your car’s hood is hot to the touch or steam billowing out from under the hood, schedule a service appointment as soon as possible as your car could have an oil leak causing the engine to overheat.

How to Reset Oil Change Light

While each vehicle has a specific process for resetting the oil change light, the general process is the same. However, you’ll only want to reset the oil change light if you’ve actually changed your oil. You car could become damaged in the long run if you go too long without an oil change.

How to Reset Oil Change Light: Step-by-Step:

  • Turn all of the systems of your car off, but make sure to leave the engine running.
  • Find the “reset” button or stick on your dashboard. It’s typically found near the speedometer and fuel gauge in your vehicle.
  • Hold this button down until the oil change light begins to flash. This signal can differ from vehicle to vehicle.
  • Turn the ignition off. Then, wait a few seconds. Finally, turn your car back on.

The oil light should be reset. If you have any questions about how to reset your oil change light, our team is ready to help!
